Bergia Frites — large-scale stainless steel process drainage for a new production extension

More than two kilometres of stainless steel channels and sewage lines, multiple pump pits, and eighteen months of building alongside the new construction.

First on site

The project at Bergia Frites in Roermond was a long-term undertaking. After being postponed several times, construction of the extensive expansion finally began in 2024.

Sandstra RVS was one of the first subcontractors of Cordeel-Geelen present on site. In the first construction phase we installed part of the stainless steel process sewage, a pump pit and the first floor channels for the tank room.

This work had to be carried out at an early stage, because the first tanks had to be placed before the building's roof could be closed.

Room after room, throughout the plant

Over a period of roughly eighteen months, Sandstra RVS then equipped the remaining production areas with stainless steel process sewage, floor channels and various pump pits in phases.

The floor channels are of robust design and fitted with hinged heavy-duty plate gratings. This makes them suitable for the high loads in the production environment while remaining easily accessible for inspection and cleaning.

Process sewage

1,150 metres, entirely in stainless steel

A key part of the project was installing the process sewage system entirely in stainless steel. The main sewer, with diameters up to Ø219 mm, runs from the furthest parts of the plant towards the central collection pit at the heart of the building.

The longest single run measures approximately 120 metres, bridging a fall of around 700 mm. Precise setting out and coordination with the groundworks contractor were essential here. Not only did the fall have to be right across the entire run, the final connection depth at the pump pit also had to be reached exactly.

Sequence of work

Tight coordination between disciplines

Given the scale of the project and the phased construction, a well-organised sequence of work was essential.

The groundworks contractor creates the trenches and recesses needed for the sewage lines.

Sandstra RVS installs the underground stainless steel process sewage.

Once position, height and fall have been checked, the recesses are backfilled and the reinforced concrete foundations for the floor channels are placed.

We place the stainless steel channels, set them out precisely, align them and fix them permanently.

After final fixing, the underground sewage is connected to the channels.

The groundworks and concrete contractors take over and finish the industrial floors room by room.

Result

Eighteen months building one integrated drainage system

Because of the phased execution, Sandstra RVS worked alongside the progress of the new build for approximately 1.5 years.

With over 2 kilometres of stainless steel channels and sewage lines, multiple pump pits and a total system volume of approximately 110 m³, an extensive integrated process drainage system was realised at Bergia Frites.

A project in which engineering, production, setting out, logistics planning and close cooperation with the various construction disciplines determined the end result.
