The assignment

Preparing a storage hall for production

Since 1993, Katjang Pedis in Sint-Maartensdijk has been processing peanuts and nuts — from almonds and cashews to pistachios and seeds. To expand production capacity, an existing logistics storage area was converted into a processing area.

A storage floor is not designed for wet cleaning. The new function called for hygienic, easy-to-clean drainage that works seamlessly with the new resin floor finish.

Gratings that never have to come out

The processing area has three stainless steel floor channels of 25 metres each, fitted with our own hinged grating system. The gratings swing open, so the full length of the channel can be inspected and cleaned quickly.

Nothing needs to be lifted and the gratings always stay attached to the channel. They cannot get lost, get in the way or damage the floor. That is easier on staff and saves time during daily cleaning.

The channels are also laid to a fall, so water and product residue flow to the pits by themselves instead of standing in the channel.

Detailing

The transition from resin floor to stainless steel

The floor is finished with Bolidt BOLIDTOP 700. The most critical point in such a floor is the connection to the channel: the resin floor must transition seamlessly and watertight into the stainless steel, with no gaps where dirt or moisture can collect.

That is why we consulted closely with Katjang Pedis and Bolidt from the preparation stage. Together we matched the detailing of the channel edges to the floor build-up, creating a perfect, hygienic transition.

Pits

Strainer and odour trap in every pit

The channels drain via stainless steel pits with a removable strainer. Product residue and dirt are caught before entering the sewer, and the strainer is easy to empty and clean.

An odour trap in every pit keeps sewer smells out of the processing area — essential in an environment where food is processed.

Result

Floor and drainage as one coordinated whole

Where pallets once stood, there is now a processing area with a seamless resin floor and 75 metres of stainless steel channel, laid to a fall, that can be cleaned quickly and thoroughly every day.

The result of early, close coordination between client, floor supplier and Sandstra RVS: floor and channel were not designed separately, but as one system.
